Las Reinas

Although I got to try  Las Reinas at the Dufferin Grove Farmers’ Market, they are only there one other weekend this summer, so best bet is to check their website for their pop-up locations or go indulge at the Davisville Farmers’ Market (located at Davisville and Mount Pleasant) most Tuesday afternoons from 3-7. Beyond their ability to create a very inviting “restaurant” on just a simple table under a tent, they make vegetarian “arepas”, which are latin corn-based flatbreads made with organic veggies and seeds. They slice these colourful things open and stuff them with incredible, savoury fillings.

As I approached their table with enthusiasm, I had to choose between 3 varieties of arepas – a green one made with cilantro and kale, a red one made with beets and an orange one made with carrots. Being that I’m not a huge cilantro or beet fan, I decided on the carrot one loaded with sesame and stuffed with black beans and chipotle feta cheese. I had to choose between two sauces and although I almost dismissed the bright green one based on cilantro, I decided to try it, and needless to say it was beyond delicious and I enjoyed every bite of it all!

I was only steps away when I finished eating my arepa, and raced back to tell them how awesmazing it was and to buy a set of 4 to take home – one of each included.

They have specific steps to prepare your arepas at home ( I switched step one and two and it worked out just great!)

1. Heat in oven or toaster until “caliente”

2. Cut lengthwise

3. Fill them with anything you like

4. Do a happy dance and enjoy!

I definitely suggest you try to catch them at the market at some point in the summer. It is a great afternoon snack in the sunshine!

Their chalkboard menu tells all! Most vendors at the market need to change their menu often to reflect what is in season!
